Cape Coast, Ghana — Hundreds of university students staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday following a sharp increase in hostel accommodation fees ahead of the new academic semester.
The demonstration, which took place near the main entrance of the university campus, saw students carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding an immediate review of the new charges.
Many students argued that the increase would place additional financial pressure on families already struggling with the rising cost of living.
“Some of us depend entirely on our parents or guardians. These new fees are simply too high,” a student protester said.
According to student leaders, hostel fees in some private facilities near the campus have increased by more than 30 percent compared to last year.
University authorities say discussions are ongoing with hostel operators to address the concerns raised by students.
Management officials also urged protesters to remain calm and avoid disrupting academic activities while negotiations continue.
Security personnel were deployed around the campus during the protest, although no violent incidents were reported.
Education analysts say accommodation costs are becoming a growing challenge for tertiary students across Ghana as demand for housing continues to rise.
