Tamale, Ghana — Frustrated residents in parts of Tamale are calling on authorities to urgently address persistent water shortages that have affected households and businesses for several months.
Residents say taps in several communities have remained dry for long periods, forcing families to travel long distances in search of water.
Some residents claim they now depend heavily on water vendors, leading to increased daily expenses.
“We wake up at dawn just to search for water. Sometimes we spend hours in queues,” a resident explained.
Business owners including food vendors, hairdressers, and car wash operators say the shortages are negatively affecting their operations.
Officials from the Ghana Water Company Limited acknowledged the challenges and attributed the situation to technical difficulties and increasing demand.
The company says repair works and supply improvement projects are currently underway to restore stable water distribution.
Meanwhile, community leaders are urging government agencies to accelerate long-term infrastructure investments to prevent recurring shortages.
Health experts have also warned residents against storing unsafe water for long periods, citing possible sanitation and disease risks.
