NATO members are holding urgent consultations after a drone identified as being of Russian origin crashed into a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați, close to the border with Ukraine. The incident injured two civilians and has been described by Romanian authorities as one of the most serious security breaches affecting the country since the start of the Russia–Ukraine war.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to defending every member state, stressing that NATO remains prepared to respond to threats against its territory. Several Western governments also expressed support for Romania and renewed calls for stronger measures against Russia.
Moscow denied responsibility for the crash, suggesting the drone may have belonged to Ukraine and requesting access to the wreckage for examination. However, Romanian officials said preliminary findings indicate the drone originated from Russian military operations linked to attacks on Ukrainian targets near the border.
The incident has heightened concerns across Eastern Europe about the possibility of the conflict spilling beyond Ukraine’s borders. Romania has already increased security measures and is working closely with NATO partners to strengthen air-defense capabilities in the region. Analysts warn that further incidents could increase tensions between Russia and the military alliance at a time when diplomatic relations remain extremely strained.
