Tamale, Ghana — National security operatives have intercepted a vehicle carrying suspected smuggled weapons during a security operation near Ghana’s northern border, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to preliminary reports, officers stopped a commercial vehicle during a routine inspection after receiving intelligence about possible cross-border trafficking activities.
A search conducted by security personnel reportedly uncovered several hidden firearms, ammunition, and other suspicious materials concealed beneath cargo items.
Three suspects travelling in the vehicle were immediately arrested for questioning.
Security officials say investigations are ongoing to determine the origin and intended destination of the weapons.
“This operation forms part of intensified efforts to prevent illegal arms trafficking and protect national security,” a security source stated.
Authorities have not yet released full details regarding the quantity of weapons seized, citing ongoing investigations.
The interception comes amid increasing regional concerns about transnational crime, smuggling, and illegal arms movements across West Africa.
Residents in nearby border communities have welcomed the operation, describing it as an important step toward improving safety and preventing criminal activities.
Security analysts warn that porous borders continue to present challenges for law enforcement agencies despite ongoing surveillance operations.
Government officials have meanwhile assured the public that security agencies remain on high alert and are strengthening intelligence cooperation with neighbouring countries to combat organized crime and cross-border threats.
