President John Dramani Mahama has renewed his administration’s commitment to protecting media freedom, describing an independent press as a key pillar of Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking during activities marking developments in Ghana’s media landscape, the President emphasized that journalists must be able to carry out their work without intimidation or interference. He noted that a vibrant media environment contributes to transparency, accountability, and informed public participation in national affairs.
Government officials say recent improvements in Ghana’s international press freedom rankings demonstrate progress in strengthening democratic institutions and protecting freedom of expression. The administration has pledged to continue engaging media organizations and stakeholders to address challenges facing the industry.
The President stressed that while freedom of expression remains fundamental, responsible journalism is equally important in promoting national development and social cohesion.
Political analysts say the issue of media freedom is likely to remain a major topic in Ghana’s governance discussions as the country continues to strengthen its democratic credentials.
